Osorno Volcano across Lake Llanquihue

From Valparaiso we sailed South to Puerto Montt. It is a port city in southern Chile’s Lake District, known as a gateway to the Andes mountains and the Patagonian fjords. Nearby, Casa del Arte Diego Rivera displays contemporary works by local and national artists. It is the gateway from the Lakes Region in Chile using a land route of highways, roads, lakes and some trails to San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. We took that route on our trip in 2001 to South America.

Waiting to board.

You drive from Puerto Montt to Puerto Petrohue in Parque Nacional Vicente Perez Rosales to board the boat across Lago Esmeralda.

Hotel at Puerto Petrohue for people who have to stay overnight on the trip.
The views across the lake are really outstanding.

After the Boat ride we returned to Puerto Varas for lunch. Stopping at Saltos Del Rio Petrohue falls on the way.

We next arrived at Puerto Varas.

Puerto Varas is a city in southern Chile’s Lake District. It sits on the southwest banks of the expansive Lake Llanquihue, which offers commanding views of snow-capped Osorno Volcano and Calbuco Volcano, both still active.

Nice summer day in the Plaza
Also on the Beach.

From here we returned to the Viking Jupiter.

  1. Looks amazing! I think Jim was in that area fishing a while back. And I just had friends do a 4 week back packing trip in that area. What an amazing adventure.

    1. I remember that Jim had a friend down there years ago and went fishing. A year later a volcano erupted and wiped out some areas. Glad the blog is beginning to work. I will get it updated as time goes By. Great to hear from you.
Have the kids come home from school? Is everyone staying safe and healthy?
